Domwe Island & Fat Monkey's | Malawi
For most South-Africans, travelling to Malawi, is not an option. It is quite far and the uncertainty of travelling through Zimbabwe leaves one with doubt. Nevertheless, we decided that we will embark on this adventure.
Our first stop in Malawi was Cape MacClear which is situated next to lake Malawi, where we would spend the night before traveling over the lake to Domwe Island. At Cape McClear we spent the night at a accommodation spot called "Fat monkeys".

Early morning, we were up, getting our things ready for crossing the lake to spend 3 nights on Domwe. This place is remarkable. The local boat picked us up around 10am. A friends of ours mention that it is really not much that you experience the exact same beauty as seen on the marketing pictures.
Domwe Island consists of 6 wooden decs. 3 of them is open plan, which is ideal to set up your own tent, and the other 3 has tents that is already set up.
There is all sorts of life on this Island. You will see reptiles, cats, and "boom dassies". We were even able to feed fish eagles fresh fish. You whistle, throw the fish a few metres into the water, and they come and grab the fish as close as 2m from your kayak/boat.
We were braaing on the shore of the Lake, swimming, Kayaking, reading book and just relaxing and enjoying this hidden gem without even thinking about what the wifi password is. Don't forget your hammock for this one.

- Wifi can be bought at reception and was very cheap.
- Kitchen and bar with very friendly staff and delicious burgers
- Neat and clean showers and toilets
- A nice and big dining area where you can have your meal or sit and play games

- A nice dining area overlooking the lake where you can have your meal or sit and play games
